IPPNW calls for a ban on uranium mining

19th IPPNW World Congress in Basel

The International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) adopted a resolution at its International Council meeting on Sunday in Basel, Switzerland, calling for a ban on uranium mining and the production of yellowcake (uranium oxide). The resolution described both processes as “irresponsible” and “a grave threat to health and to the environment”.

Global Indigenous conference calls for an end to nuclear industry

Delegates to the inaugural 'Sacred Lands, Poisoned Peoples' conference have today released a joint statement calling for an end to all uranium mining and processing, irresponsible radioactive waste management, nuclear power and nuclear weapons.

Sacred Land, Poisoned Peoples

Pre-conference: "Uranium Mining, Health and Indigenous Peoples"

Around the globe, some seventy-five percent of uranium mining takes place on the lands of indigenous peoples. The largest uranium reserves are found in Canada and Australia; uranium is also mined throughout Latin America and in Kazakhstan, Niger, Russia, Namibia and Uzbekistan. Exploration for further uranium ore bodies is presently underway in Tanzania, Mali, and the Amazon region of Brazil.

IPPNW World Congress

August 25-30, 2010

IPPNW World Congresses are held every two years. The 19th World Congress will be held in the Swiss city of Basel from August 25-30, 2010. Physicians will gather on the campus of the university of Basel to discuss nuclear disarmament. In parallel to the main debates, smaller meetings and workshops will examine numerous other medical and peace-related topics. One of the main topics is The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference taking place in New York City in 2010.
